Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of the untouched and the ideal trekking routes in the eastern part of Nepal which was opened for trekkers since 1988. Kanchenjunga is the world’s third highest peak with the altitude of 8586m that presents endless varieties of landscapes and scenery, cultures and panoramic views of mountains including Lhotse, Everest, Kanchenjunga and Makalu. This trek is perfect for the trekkers who have abundance of time and a willing desire to venture into some of the far-flung regions of Nepal.
Kanchenjunga base camp trek route begins along the Tamur River all the way through Pipal trees and traditional villages, where the lifestyle of people hasn’t been much affected by the modern world. The popular inhabitants of this region are Limbu people who are famous for inventing Tongba. This journey passes through the country’s rhododendron and most pristine oak forests that take you to harsher high terrain. After crossing the Margin La Pass at 4480m, you get the opportunity to have to great views of Chamlang, Makalu and Everest. Then, you need to pass the Kanchenjunga glacier, finally to have an incredible close-up view of this peak after approaching the Kanchenjunga base camp at Pang Pema. While walking around the surrounding area, you can also see the panorama of The Twins, Wedge Peak, Tent Peak and Pyramid Peak.
Kanchenjunga area is also famous for its rare and exotic flora and fauna. Freshfield, the British Explorer, who visited here in 19th century have said that this area is like a heaven for the botanists in the world over. You can also see some of the most remote monasteries here that lie in the shadow of the grand Kanchenjunga. A special trekking permit is needed to trek in this area from any government registered trekking company in Nepal.
