An ancient Himalayan kingdom, Mustang which lies at the top of Kali Gandaki river and in the northern part of Nepal is considered one of the most fascinating and picturesque places of Nepal. The upper Mustang region consists of two parts: the northern and southern part where the cultures and languages of people are similar to those of Tibetan people. The whole Mustang area has a mystical and an isolated feel to it with inspiring and enchanting visitors to this region.
Upper Mustang Trekking offers unique and dramatic geography for the trekkers who have only seen those familiar forested, green landscapes in the rest of Nepal. With the cultural history as captivating as the landscapes, this region has attracted the curio of many Himalayan adventurers and it was only in 1991 that it got opened for limited visitation. In earlier days, Mustang was a vital trading route between India and Tibet and you can still see the interesting remains of forts which served as tax collection out posts then. In the late 1950s, this area was a center for guerilla’s who were armed and trained by the US C.I.A. to oppose the Chinese Army’s occupation of Tibet.
Upper Mustang Trekking route continues mostly on the valley floors though it may pass through the ridge during the sporadic rainy period that raises the level of the river. The horses will provide mounting assistance but it must be dismounted while descending. As the maximum altitude, you need to walk for this trek is just 4010m; it is not in fact, such a challenging trek which would demand a lot of physical effort. Due to lack of high passes crossings and monsoon rains, this trek has the advantage of long seasons.
